Creativity Is Key

Being in the classroom consistently brings me great joy. I love watching my students learn, and thrive in their classroom. As they find excitement in what they are doing, or persevere through a difficult challenge I find so much pride, I love that my students love to learn. Today I had the privilege of reading this book to my students: The Garden by: Kevin Henkes. The exercise was for the students to listen to the book, without seeing any pictures. They were to draw their own pictures and from their own ideas of what the book is about. I love that they were able to use their own creativity, and take the book into their own little world. When we all sat at the carpet, and I read the book to them again, this time showing the pictures their eyes lit up. They loved seeing things that they did the same as the book, but also loved showing off how they made the book even better. They easily recognized things that surprised them about the book. One student thought the main character was a boy, instead of a girl. Another, thought there would be bright colours throughout the book. I loved seeing each student so eager to show their ideas, and demonstrate to the class their personal creativity. Each week I love seeing the progression of my students, and the improvements that I have had the privilege of being a part of.
